Top 5 Hairstyle Trends for Spring and Summer 2014

With spring and summer just around the corner, fresh hairstyles are turning up everywhere. What update will you give your locks? Here are some of our favorite new trends commonly seen at our Northern VA hair salon.

Make Waves

Carefree, laid-back waves are in this season. There are plenty of ways to get this easy popular look. Braid damp hair before bed to wake up with a head full of gentle waves. You can also use your straightener to curl your locks. Just wrap your hair loosely around the straightener to set the curl. Finger curls placed around your face work nicely, too. Whichever approach you try, go for random and tousled.

Go Low

The low ponytail is nothing new, but each season brings its own twists. Super slick is the name of the game this time, so pull your pony back tightly. You’ll also want to secure it as low down as you can, right at the nape of your neck. A coat of high-gloss hairspray will make your look extra sleek. To keep the slicked-back vibe but loosen things up a little, wiggle the ponytail back and forth a little before you secure it.

Get Wet

Low ponytails aren’t the only slick style on the horizon for this spring and summer. Hairstyles across the board are incorporating a wet look. Bobs, parted up-dos, and even longer hair left loose are all candidates. You decide how wet to get. Apply a little high shine serum before you do your ‘do or go crazy and slick your whole style back. Depending on how you do it, this approach can give your look a rock ‘n’ roll vibe, a fresh-from-the-pool feel, or an elegant shine.

Bob It

Bobs got more popular in 2013. This year, they’re out in full force. That’s where the trend’s rules end, though. What your bob actually looks like is completely up to you. We’ve seen everything from slicked back to wildly textured and smoothly cut to chopped up. The key is to stay on top of cut maintenance. It doesn’t take long for a stylish bob to start looking overgrown and sloppy.

Try On Fringe

Along with bobs, we’re seeing more fringe cuts lately. Fringe can look great left long and just in front, where you can center-part it to frame your face. It also makes for a fun full-head style if you’re bold enough to go for a modern bowl cut. This option in particular looks good if you have extra thick hair.
